Turtle Nesting Tours in Kosi bay is offered from October to March when both loggerhead turtles and leatherback turtles come to lay their eggs on our beaches. In Kosi bay we search for these magnificent turtles on foot to minimize our carbon footprint.

Kosi Bay Turtle Tours

Season: Oct – Mar

Tour duration: 17:00 – 23:00

Cost: R700 per person

Our guide will collect you from your accommodation 

Every year between October and March, leatherback and Loggerhead Turtles come to lay their eggs on the mineral rich sandy beaches of iSimangaliso Wetland Park. The beaches of Kosi bay make up the heart of the Maputaland Turtle Sanctuary.

Our guide will collect you from your accommodation between 16:30 and 17:00 to transfer you to Bhanga nek beach where you will undertake a Kosi Bay Turtle Nesting Tour with the local Kosi Bay Turtle Tour Guides.

The Turtle Tour will be a star or moonlit beach walk of up to 8 km in search of Loggerhead and Leatherback Turtles emerging onto the beach to lay their eggs.

After 55 – 65 days the eggs will hatch and 80 – 100 hatchling will emerge from the sand and make a dash for the water to hopefully return to nest on the same beach in 20 years time.

Our Kosi Bay Turtle Nesting Tours are conducted with the most respect and in a ethical manner. These Turtle Tours are promised to be one of the highlights of your holiday in Kosi Bay!

Safari and Surf offer Kayaking trips on the Kosi bay estuary. The kayaking tour will take you past the traditional fish traps and the mangrove channels where you will get to see 5 different types of mangrove trees.

Our Kosi Bay Kayaking Guide will meet you on the road down to Kosi Bay Mouth at the first Thonga Fish traps.  

The Kosi Bay Estuary is by far the most pristine estuarine system on the east coast of South Africa.

Boasting with 5 different species of mangrove trees, incredible bird life, fish diversity, Thonga culture and some of the best kayaking tour experiences imaginable.   

Our famous Kosi Bay Kayaking guide will be waiting for you on the road down to Kosi Bay mouth.

From here he will direct you to a safe parking area and lead you to the kayaks where your incredible Kosi Bay Kayaking adventure will start.

He will guide you through the Kosi Bay fish kraals and into the magical mangrove channels! Here you will be mind-blown by the serenity and natural beauty of the Kosi Bay Estuary!

 

Snorkeling in Kosi bay is incredible! There are several different spot to snorkel ranging from the calm sheltered waters of the kosi bay estuary to the tidal zones in the protected bays.

Kosi Bay Snorkeling Adventures

Meet our Kosi Bay Snorkeling Guide down at the Kosi Bay mouth parking area at the arranged meeting time and explore the wonders of the Aquarium! 

Snorkeling in this well known area is incredible with lots of colorful fish. The Kosi Bay mouth Snorkeling area is known as the “Aquarium” due to the huge amount of colorful tropical fish that congregate here.

On our Kosi Bay Snorkeling Adventures we generally see 40-50 different species including surgeons, parrot fish, morey’s, lionfish and lots of different wrasse. 

Our Kosi Bay Snorkeling guide will start with a safety briefing, hand out snorkeling equipment and then guide you around safely in the Kosi Bay Snorkeling area.

Kosi bay is home to one of the largest colonies of Raphia palm trees in South Africa. We offer guided Raphia forest walks in search of Palm-nut vultures and other special birds around this special and unique ecosystem.

Kosi Bay Raphia Forest Walks

Our Kosi Bay Raphia Palm Forest Walk guide will collect you from your accommodation in Kosi Bay and drive you over 4×4 sand roads to the edge of the Kosi Bay Raphia Palm Forest.

From here he will guide you on foot through the coastal lowland forest, swamp forest and  Kosi Bay raphia forest.

This walk is a perfect example of a typical Eco-diversity of the Kosi Bay area. A birders paradise with a great possibility of seeing Palm Nut Vultures!

Meet our Kosi Bay Cultural Walk guide just outside the iSimangaliso, Kosi Bay Mouth gate for a beautiful cultural walk to the Mouth and surrounding areas. 

Our experienced Thonga guide will inform you about the medicinal uses of plants, edible fruit and introduce you to the rich culture of the Thonga people. 

Our Kosi Bay Cultural walk guide will take you past the traditional fish kraals with a detailed explanation on how they function and form part of their Thonga culture.

Kosi Bay Fish Trap Tour

Season: All year 

Tour duration: 45 minutes

Cost: R100 per person

This is the perfect add-on to most of our Kosi Bay Mouth adventures.

Our Kosi Bay guide will introduce you to a local Thonga fish kraal owner.

With the translating of our Kosi Bay guide he will explain the tradition and method of the Traditional Kosi Bay Fish Kraals.

The Fish Kraals are made entirely of natural materials, a true old Thonga Tradition that have been in use for the last 800 years.

If there are any fish in the traps you’ll get the chance of spearing your own fish for lunch or dinner!
